Jumpline.com Profile and Background

Jumpline is probably one of the oldest and largest web hosting companies in this competitive industry. The company is headquartered in Grove City, Ohio and has its own data center facility, housed in Qwest’s $63 million Cybercenter, in the same area. According to the company, it has over 50 000 customers.

The network operation center used by Jumpline also house prominent businesses and organizations, such as, J P Morgan, Redhat and the Department of Defense. The hardware powering the web servers are industry recognized Dell PowerEdge Servers with Intel processors and hot-swappable hard drive bays.

Service Offerings

Unlike its other major web hosting competitors, Jumpline has builds it flagship web hosting product from Sphera’s VDS (Virtual Dedicated Server) technology rather than a shared virtual platform. This provides customers with robost features including an independent file structure, mail server, and multi-layered security. Such a setup comes at a premium but for growing businesses worried about security and performance, that VDS is the ideal option.

The one complaint we do not about Sphera’s VDS control panel is the sluggish and slow response. It certainly needs to speed things up in this respect. However, the ‘looks-and-feel’, or the aesthetic, of the control panel was top notch. It resulted in a very intuitive graphical user interface.

Jumpline makes available four main VDS products and a reseller program to customers and the price range from $9.95/month to $75/month. For our web hosting review, we selected a mid end solution called VDS500 for $14.95/month on an annual term.

Value for Money

It is difficult to compare Jumpline’s VDS web hosting plans with other web hosting companies as they are not based on the same kind of technology or infrastructure. With our VDS500 plan, we were allocated 1GB of disk space, 15GB of monthly bandwidth, 150 E-mail accounts and allowed to host up to 6 domain names.

For a further $4.95/month, you gain access to a web site building application that has a whopping 4000+ web design templates to choose from. From our perspective this is definitely worth the addition few dollars as it includes Macromedia flash intros. Nonetheless, we would have liked Jumpline providing customers with a stripped down version of the site builder program as it seems to be the norm for some web hosting companies nowadays.

Customer Support

The customer support underlying Jumpline is their customer service department that is open from Monday to Friday, and a 24x7 ticketing style system. We rang the customer service department first but were unfortunately closed – they open from 9am to 6pm. So, we sent a support ticket through it Customer Manager. It took Jumpline over 48 hours to respond to our support ticket, which we considered to be below average. If you have an urgent support issue, we recommend that you try and contact them by phone during normal business hours.

Certainly not the start we expected.

Network Reliability and Performance

Over a two month monitoring period, Jumpline achieved a perfect score in terms of network reliability and performance. Our in-house monitoring tool detected no down time, and this is no man feat! It really seems there choice in using Qwest’s $63 million Cybercenter really paid off.

Final Words

Jumpline is certainly a web hosting company with a unique way of distinguishing itself from its competitors. Its adoption of VDS technology for its flagship products would be ideal for businesses who have security and performance concerns. Although areas, such as, customer support needs some more work, it definitely doesn’t disappoint when you look at the whole picture.
