Startlogic.com Profile and Background

Startlogic is a relatively new web hosting company that was formed in 2003 and headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. The company’s datacenter is also based in the same city. The secured facility is designed with raised floors, HVAC temperature control systems, redundant power, UPS back-up and power conditioning systems and generators. Its connectivity is from redundant optical fiber connections through Cox, Qwest, and ELI, in addition to multiple Internet back-bone providers, including UUNET, Broadwing, and Global Crossing.

Our first impressions were the company’s product line in that it was very much focused on three market segments: shared, VPS and dedicated web hosting. This is not a bad move as it will contain costs and diversify the company’s revenues, but it may limit businesses flexibility when the time to upgrade comes around.

According to its website, Startlogic’s purpose of building a web hosting company based on “…the result of providing prompt, dependable, worthwhile service” is commendable. Let’s see if this mission statement holds true or not.

Signup Process

After browsing thoroughly through the website, we decided to purchase the Prologic web hosting package, as it seemed to be on the surface the most bang-for-the-buck for $7.50/month. The signup process was relatively easy to understand and everything was very intuitive. However, when it came to processing a VISA credit card, it spat the dummy. This might be a one off case so we tried with a MASTERCARD and it seemed to process that fine.

When we checked the e-mail about 20 minutes later, we were happy to find an e-mail from the company confirming our purpose and other relevant details about the web hosting service account. Apart from the little hitch during the signup process, it went relatively smoothly.

Value for Money

The Prologic web hosting package that we purchased with an advertised price of $7.50/month was for buyers with the intent of staying for 12 months or more. If you paid month by month, then the true cost would have been $12.50/month with a setup fee of $15. However, we went with the annual contract for some very good reasons.

By purchasing, the annual plan we received a free domain name and the setup fee of $15 was wavered. The web hosting plan came with 5GB of disk space, 100GB monthly data transfer allowance, and unlimited e-mail accounts. In terms of value for money, Starlogic really put their front foot down to the other major web hosting companies.

Starlogic’s proprietary control panel VDECK is absolutely featured-pack in which we were impressed with. It was similar to CPanel in offering features like pre-installed scripts, or ‘power plugins’, shopping carts and a website building/editing program. We also found it much more responsive that CPanel. A lot of users will appreciate these features as we did.

Customer Support

Once we had our new domain name up and running on Starlogic, we “sabotaged” one of our HTML files – we simply couldn’t resist! – and contacted the support department using its ticketing system. The response time for the ticket can be considered a little above average in just less than six hours. The support department can also be contacted with their live support feature.

The next day, we tested their toll free number and were immediately directed to a support representative without any delay. Maybe their mission statement does hold some truth!

Also, we found the support section of Startlogic’s website very handy in that it offers an array of resources to self-troubleshoot your own problems and to get started. It seems they spent considerable amount of effort in the documentation – we certainly recommend beginners to browse through it!

Network Reliability and Performance

Our in-house monitoring tool performed its magic and maintained watch over our test website for over two months. The results painted a fairly good picture of Startlogic’s network performance where in the first month, it detected 3 five-to-ten minute down times, and a clean sheet in the second month. We could not find any official responses or notifications for the downtimes.

Overall, since the tool monitors the availability of the domain every five minutes, it proves the company’s network is a consistent performer as well.

Final Words

Being a relatively young web hosting company, Startlogic has certainly exceeded our expectations in terms support and value for money. The accumulation of a free domain name, low service costs, excellent control panel features and a steady network would prove irresistible for most web host hunters.

The web hosting company’s mission statement of “…providing prompt, dependable, worthwhile service” certainly holds true in our view.
